What is the NU-AGE Study?

The Nu-AGE study is a large-scale, randomized controlled trial that was conducted in Europe to investigate the effects of a Mediterranean-style diet on healthy aging. The study was designed to test the hypothesis that a Mediterranean diet could slow down the process of aging and improve physical and cognitive function in older adults.

The study involved over 1,200 participants aged 65-79 years who were living independently in five European countries. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: a group that followed a Mediterranean-style diet, and a control group that followed their usual diet.

The Mediterranean-style diet used in the Nu-AGE study was similar to the traditional Mediterranean diet and included foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish, and olive oil. The diet was designed to be low in red meat, dairy, and saturated fats. The participants in the Mediterranean diet group were also given personalized nutrition advice and encouraged to consume nuts and extra-virgin olive oil.

The study found that after one year, the participants in the Mediterranean diet group had improved cognitive function, better physical function, and a lower risk of frailty compared to the control group. The Mediterranean diet group also had lower levels of inflammation and oxidative stress, which are believed to play a role in the aging process.

The Nu-AGE study provided strong evidence that a Mediterranean-style diet can have significant positive effects on aging and can improve cognitive and physical function in older adults. The study has helped to reinforce the importance of a healthy and balanced diet for healthy aging, and has contributed to the growing interest in the Mediterranean diet as a dietary pattern that promotes health and longevity.
