Ayurveda, the ancient medical science, is based on the principle of preventing diseases. It directs us to resist diseases through our food habits and lifestyles.
Same principle was stressed by Hippocrates. “Let your food be your medicine” was his advice to the human kind.
1. LONG HISTORY OF TURMERIC
Over the last several years, there has been increasing interest in turmeric and its medicinal properties. Ayurveda has immensely praised the medicinal qualities of turmeric which finds its place in almost all ayurvedic preparations related to liver and skin disorders.
This herb has occupied the shelves of every Indian kitchen for 6000 years and is considered the king of the kitchen. It is used daily in cooking and apart from cooking it is also used as a beauty aid.
Many high-quality studies show that turmeric and especially its main active ingredient curcumin have great health benefits related to heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancer, arthritis, etc.
Doctors recommend taking a turmeric curcumin supplement of 500 mg twice daily with food. It is best taken with heart-healthy foods such as avocados, nuts, and oils to ensure optimal absorption.
2. MAIN ACTIVE INGREDIENTS OF TURMERIC
Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) belongs to the Zingiberacae Family and is a perennial plant that grows 3 to 5 feet high in the tropical regions. In India it is grown all over but specially in Bengal, Bombay and in Tamilnadu. Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow color.
Many studies show that turmeric has major benefits for your body and brain. Turmeric contains compounds with medicinal properties. These compounds are called curcuminoids. The most important one is curcumin.
Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. However, curcumin isn't well absorbed into the bloodstream and therefore it helps to consume it with black pepper and its natural substance piperine which enhances the absorption of curcumin by about 20x.
In addition, the curcumin compound itself isn't very high in turmeric which makes it very difficult to reach the necessary dosage just by using turmeric as spice in your foods. It might be easier to reach your necessary dosage of curcumin by taking supplements. As curcumin breaks down and dissolves in fat or oil you might want to take your supplements with a meal high in fat or oil to gain the most health benefit from it.
Note: Some turmeric curcumin supplements are formulated with coconut oil for that specific reason.
3. RESEARCH SHOWS VARIOUS BENEFITS OF TURMERIC
Many studies show the enormous health benefits of turmeric and curcumin. Most of these studies use turmeric extracts that include large amounts of curcumin for reasons mentioned above.
Here are some of the health benefits backed by many medical studies:
